Sour grapes

Depleted Uranium seems to have had a bad case of sour grapes because South Africa didn’t wholeheartedly support Britain at the UN in the captured sailors affair and urges Brits not to travel to or invest in this “once great nation“.
The problem is that the government of that once-great nation Britain has lied to us [...]

Where are the black bloggers?

Where are all the black bloggers in South Africa?
Look at South African blog aggregator sites like Amatomu, and the vast majority of the bloggers there are white. And this in spite of the fact that it is run by the Mail & Guardian newspaper, which has several black journalists. So if there are black [...]

Blair, the slave trade and apologies

Anglican bishops have demanded that British Prime Minister Tony Blair apologise for the slave trade on the 200th anniversary of its abolition in Britain.
This has led to quite a lot of discussion in the blogosphere, with some pointing out some of the advantages of the slave trade, and others supporting the call for an [...]

Bonsai trees are demonic

Bonsai trees are demonic — or so it seems Dominee Bennie Mostert of the Moreleta Park NG Kerk has said.

More on social networking

It seems that at last Facebook is taking off among South African students. It was originally intended for use by students, and has only recently opened up to everyone.

One is the Mother of God, the Virgin Mary.
The other is St Mary of Egypt, a prostitute of Alexandria, whose repentance has been told down the years. You can rerad more about her here.

Who’s looking for whom?

I glanced at the top ten Technorati searches this morning, and saw some names that were unfamiliar to me: Cathy Seipp, Steven Furtick (who has a name like that?) and John Edwards. There was also Paris Hilton.
No names that have been in the news recently, like Bob Woolmer.
What makes everyone search for these names, other [...]

Perfidious Albion

Colonialism is a thing of the past, you think?
No, British colonialism is alive and well. Is being a British citizen worth anything if you can’t vote and influence the government?
A sk the poor suckers on Ascension Island. See the full story on David’s daily diversions.

South African inventions

An interesting post here on South African inventions, with a comprehensive review of a book on the subject.
Perhaps that’s worth recording on South Africa rocks.

Mugabe, Verwoerd and Human Rights Day

Today is Human Rights Day in South Africa.
It commemorates the massacre of a group of peaceful protesters outside a police station in Sharpeville, near Vereeniging, on 21 March 1960. The protesters had gone to the police station without the passes that blacks had to carry on them at all times, and ask to be arrested [...]
