Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute

The Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute’s annual conference begins in Johannesburg tomorrow (Monday, March 31). If you are interested, you can find the details here: SAFCEI: SAFCEI AGM and Public Meeting - Johannesburg.

I was rather hoping to attend, but when a service for my car cost R4000 more than I expected, my disposable income dropped to nil, so I’ll probably have to give it a miss.

I did attend part of last year’s meeting (at the request of my bishop, who is a member of the executive) and it struck me that if they wanted to get their message out, and even communicate better with their own members, they should use electronic media, like a blog or a mailing list, or even both, which could get the members communicating with each other between conferences. Like so many faith-based orgfanisations, however, very few people saw the need, so eventually I volunteered to start a demo blog for them, to show how it could be used. I don’t think it’s been very successful though — in the three months it has been going it hasn’t attracted a single comment. I don’t even know if any SAFCEI members have read it.

I was hoping to go to this year’s conference to encourage people to make more use of it, and to find someone else who could take it over. But I think the intersection between the Blogosphere and the Religiosphere remains extremely small, in South Africa, at least.

  • I guess the intersection between the spheres is small - but I am glad that it is there! For those of us who like to think, the blog world gives such cool insight into other religious/Christian worlds. It will be interesting to watch that intersection grow, don’t you think?
