The Shrieking Man has some interesting comments on the current state of South African politics as we prepare for next year’s general election. Things seem to be in a state of flux, when a recent survey on the president’s performance producing an unusually high proportion of “don’t knows”.
Anyway, here’s The Shrieking Man’s table of ideologies for the established parties:
| Party | Percentage of vote in 2004 | Professed ideology |
| ANC | 69% | 60% social democracy, 30% neoliberalism, 10% black consciousness. |
| DA | 10% | 60% neoliberalism, 40% white supremacy |
| IFP | 6% | 50% neoliberalism, 40% Zulu supremacy, 10% black consciousness. |
| UDM | 2% | 100% humbug |
| FF+ | 1% | 90% white supremacy, 10% social democracy. |
I wonder how he classifies the Independent Democrats. It’s probably too soon to guess what COPE will be like.
