A busy day
It was Val’s birthday and Name Day today (St Katherine of Alexandria), and we had a pretty busy day. First we went to the Hours and Readers Service at Mamelodi, and then went to the annual prizegiving at St Athanasius School in Tembisa, with the monks from St Thomas’s Orthodox Church in Sunninghill, with the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Seraphim, Archbishop of Johannesburg and Pretoria. Here is Val with Fr Evsevije (Eusebius).
We began with a Molieben Service for school children, and Father Pantelejmon blessed them. At the prizegiving just about all the children got certificates for something, and several of them presented plays or sang songs. There was a group of marching drum majorettes. The kindergarten children all “graduated” to primary school, with academic caps and gowns. The picture showsFr Evsevije and Fr Pantelejmon with one of the drum majorettes.
Next yeaer the monks will be going to the school for regular religious instruction classes, and will also be having catechism classes for members of the congregation. We have services in one of the school classrooms every Sunday. It is a relatively new congregation, and the first members were baptised last June. Val and I join them every second Sunday (on the other Sundays we are in Mamelodi), and when we are not there members of the congregation lead the services themselves.
