Good Friday in Brixton

26 April 2008

Good Friday 2008St Nicholas Orthodox Church in Brixton, Johannesburg looked almost like a cathedral on Good Friday, 25 April 2008, when there were three priests and three deacons serving.

For three months St Nicholas has had no priest of its own, since the previous priest, Fr Mircea Corpodean, left to concentrated on developing the new Romanian parish of St Andrew. During Lent Fr Athanasius Akunda, the deputy dean of the Catechetical School in Yeoville has been serving at St Nicholas, assisted by others who have joined in. In the picture are Fr Nektarius Mandipaushe, Deacon Irenaeus MacDonald, Deacon Stephen Hayes, Fr Athanasius Akunda, Hierodeacon Nektarius Ritson, and Fr Johannes Rakumako.

Though St Nicholas is one of the smaller parishes in the Archdiocese of Johannesburg and Pretoria, it has produced more clergy than most of the other parishes. Deacons Iraenaeus and Stephen were both formerly members of the parish. It was also the first English speaking Orthodox parish in Gauteng.
