17 October 2008

Bishop Atanasje arrived in Johannesburg from Serbia to attend the 30th anniversary celebtrations of St Thomas’s Orthodox Church in Sunninghill Park.

He will be celebrating Vespers on Saturday 18 October at 5:00 pm together with the Archbishop of Johannesburg and Pretoria, and will speak on “The forgotten ways — monasticism and church fathers in the modern and postmodern world”.

He will also celebrate services on Sunday, and visit monasteries and other church institutions next week.

Bishop Atanasije was welcomed by parishioners of St Thomas’s Church, and South African Orthodox clergy with a short prayer service and lunch. As the Bishop blessed the food for lunch, it began to rain — the first rain of the summer season, so it seemed a very auspicious blessing.
